Workshop with John Campbell in July

Ashtanga workshop (early morning)
Date: July 3rd Saturday & 4th Sunday
Time: 07:00-08:30

For two mornings, this workshop will lead the group through the sequence of poses in the Primary Series of the Ashtanga Yoga system.  The teacher will focus on the precise connection of movement and breathing known in Sanskrit as vinyāsa.  This is a rare opportunity to learn about this powerful yoga practice with one of the few senior disciples of the late Shri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India.

Sanskrit (for 200-hour instructor)
Date: July 3rd Saturday
Time: 09:00-12:00

Sanskrit (for Advanced Teacher Training)
Date: July 3rd Saturday
Time: 13:30-16:30
Fee:  General 10,000yen (TT 9,000yen) for 2 workshops
General 6,000yen  (TT 5,500yen) for each session

Sanskrit, "the language of the gods," is essential for any in-depth study of yoga. For the aspiring yoga teacher, familiarity with Sanskrit is no mere window dressing; knowing key terms of the yoga vocabulary with their correct pronunciation deepens one's practice by opening a door to the vast and profound universe of the yogic sciences. As exploration blossoms into knowledge and then understanding, the firm foundation is created on which a practitioner may begin correctly to transmit the precious teachings of yoga.

Yoga Sutra
Date: July 4th Sunday
Time: 09:00-12:00
Fee:  General 6,000yen  (TT 5,500yen)

The four chapters of Patanjali's Yoga Sutra are the most enduring and influential statement on Yoga theory from ancient India. This lecture presents an outline for understanding Patanjali's basic project, his definitions of yoga, its path and its fulfillment. Key Sanskrit terms and concepts will be clarified, and the student will have the experience of chanting the original Sanskrit. The overall intention of this section is to provide the student with the basic knowledge necessary to pursue further study of this profound text.

Bhagavad Gita
Date: July 4th Sunday
Time: 13:00-17:00
Fee:  General 8,000yen  (TT 7,500yen)

This lecture guides the class through a deep reading of the famous "Song of the Lord", the teachings of the Hindu God Krishna to his disciple Arjuna. In this 2000 year-old Sanskrit poem, Krishna plays the role of the Yoga master, the guru, and explains to his depressed student various spiritual paths. Krishna calls these different approaches to dealing with human suffering "yoga", and these definitions of the paths of yoga have endured to the present day as the definitive explanations of the spiritual dimensions of Yoga.

History of Yoga
Date: July 5th Monday
Time: 10:00-12:00
Fee:  General 3,500yen  (TT 3,000yen)

Tracing the origins of Yoga leads one back to the very origins of civilization in the Indian subcontinent.  This lecture will focus on key moments of development in the Yoga traditions of India through a survey of 3000 years of teachings recorded in such texts as the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Buddhist Sutras, the Hindu Puranas, the Hatha Yoga treatises like the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, and the Indian Tantric movements.  Across all this time and through so many different traditions, a central theme endures of Yoga as a highly advanced set of technologies for personal and environmental transformation.
