WORKSHOP CONTENT
For this workshop series, we have invited Carlos Pomeda, a professional lecturer in the fields of Yoga and Sanskrit, to teach us the deep history and mythology behind our daily yoga practices.
Carlos has previously instructed our students at the Be Yoga Japan studio.
The workshop series will be divided into 2 sessions as follows.
The Joy of Sanskrit
This lively seminar is for anyone interested in deepening their experience of the yoga scriptures by reading directly from significant passages. Sanskrit, the language of these scriptures, contains not only the highest knowledge about yoga and the processes of human consciousness, but also carries within itself the secrets of the power of sound.
Whether you are merely looking at improving your pronunciation of the name of yoga asanas, or to dive more deeply into the intricacies of this fascinating language, the Joy of Sanskrit Seminar will provide you with an entryway into the joy of the Sanskrit language.
The Joy of Sanskrit Seminar employs a very userfriendly methodology that allows participants to naturally absorb grammar through translation, instead of mind-numbing memorization. From the beginning, participants discover the joy of understanding passages directly. The seminar includes an introduction to the language and its history, instruction and practice into the correct pronunciation of Sanskrit sounds, translation of texts and mantras, practice into the pronunciation of common yoga terms, questions and answers, etc.

The Inherent Joy of Life: Tantric Reading of Bhagavad Gita
Where can we draw inspiration for our yoga practice? And where can we turn to for advice?
In India, these questions have often been answered in the form of the Bhagavad Gita, one of the foundational texts of the yoga tradition. Written in a simple style, yet profound; inspiring, yet practical, the Gita has shown for generations and generations of yogis and seekers the key to the integration of yoga into our daily lives.
In its pages we will find how love, knowledge and action can be the very means by which we access the highest experience. By offering various approaches, the Gita shows how to infuse with meaning, depth and joy not only our practice, but the rest of our lives as well.
In this seminar we will tap into the vitality of this classic, and we will do so by drawing from a unique tantric understanding, guided by the masterful commentary of Abhinavagupta, the foremost exponent of Kashmiri Tantra. Even if you have read or studied the Gita before, the insights contained in this commentary are unique.

ABOUT THE TEACHER (Carlos Pomeda)
“Here’s a man who can be trusted to cut through the usual window- dressing of yoga and give me the real goods… a heavyweight… without being heavy, he has a jaw-dropping range of knowledge.”
Richard Rosen, Senior Reviewer, Yoga Journal
“What impresses me as much as his clarity and depth of knowledge is his embodiment of the teachings. He teaches with a contagious humility and graciousness that encourages learning and draws you into your own process of discovery and love of the tradition.”
Leela Miller, Director of Yoga at Triyoga (London)
Originally from Madrid, Spain, Carlos has been steeped in all aspects of the yoga tradition during more than 40 years of practice and study. He spent 18 of those years as a monk of the Saraswati order, under the name Swami Gitananda, including 9 years of traditional training and practice in India.
During this time he learned the various systems of Indian Philosophy and immersed himself in the practice of yoga, becoming one of the senior monks of the tradition and teaching meditation and philosophy to tens of thousands of students around the world. He combines this experience and traditional training with his academic background, which includes two Masters Degrees: one in Sanskrit, from U.C. Berkeley (where he has taught) and another one, in Religious Studies, from U.C. Santa Barbara. He is currently working on a book on the topic of “Karma and the Journey of the Soul”, as well as a new translation of the Śivasūtra, an important Tantric text of the Kashmiri tradition .
Carlos currently lives in the US, and travels extensively around the world conducting a variety of retreats, courses, seminars, workshops and lectures on the Wisdom of Yoga and related subjects.
As a teacher, Carlos is renowned for the breadth of his knowledge and the clarity with which he conveys it. His great love of the Indian yoga traditions, his insight, his humor and his deep connection with his audiences give him the ability to transmit the deepest scriptural teachings in a way that is clear, meaningful and applicable. Studying with Carlos is an enjoyable and transformative experience.
